India and Sweden are now strategic partners, and have agreed to a five-year action plan covering a broad variety of sectors. But what do both sides stand to gain from upgraded ties? The Swedish culture minister Parisa Liljestrand today presented a proposal for a SEK one billion injection into the Swedish culture sector. The government's proposal for culture includes opening up the sector to private donations that could be financially matched by state-financing. The proposal points to Finland and its model for private and state funding of the arts.
Defence and counter-terrorism are some of the areas of cooperation between India and Sweden. The new action plan for 2026-2030 was presented on Sunday in Gothenburg when India's prime minister Narendra Modi visited Gothenburg. Around 300 Swedish companies are already established in India and in the action plan, further investments from Sweden is encouraged, including the manufacture of defence material in India.

The government announced Wednesday that it's temporarily reducing the tax on petrol and diesel as part of a SEK 17.5 billion crisis package to support Swedish households and industries in the face of the global energy crisis. A 21-year-old man has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the triple murder at a barber shop in the town of Uppsala in April last year. Two other men were sentenced to several years in prison by Uppsala District Court on Tuesday for their involvement in the fatal shooting of two teenagers and a 20-year-old man inside the barber shop. The 21-year-old has denied all criminal charges.

A man said to be a leading figure inside the Foxtrot criminal network has been arrested in Tunisia, reports Swedish Radio's crime podcast P3 Krim. Mohamed Mohdi, otherwise known as the rap artist "Moewgli" is suspected of committing a number of serious crimes. The man's lawyer has previously said to P3 Krim that his client denies all the criminal allegations. The arrest has now been officially confirmed by police in Sweden.
A Swedish man who was on the cruise ship hit by hantavirus is self-isolating at home in the region where he lives, the government said at a press conference, Tuesday. "The infectious disease control doctor in the affected region is in contact with the person and the guidelines are being followed to avoid further spread of the infection if the person turns out to be infected," said Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed. The man is currently healthy and not showing any symptoms of the Andes strain of hantavirus.
Member of Parliament Katja Nyberg has been charged with a number of driving and drug offences, the Prosecution Authority announced Monday in a press release. The authority said test results on a strand of hair show that Nyberg had drugs in her system when she was stopped in her car by police last December. Nyberg, a former Sweden Democrat and now independent MP admits to driving in March this year while banned but denies the other charges.
